The GeoNetwork opensource project is a free and open source cataloging application for spatially referenced resources. It is a catalog of location-oriented information.

It makes use of geographical positions for packet transport. GeoNetworking supports the communication among individual ITS stations as well as the distribution of packets in geographical areas. GeoNetworking is supposed to be used with ETSI ITS-G5. ITS-G5 MAC layer (ETSI EN 302 663) is based on 802.11p. In turn, 802.11p (part of 802.11-2012) is based on 802.11a, see, for example, FreeBSD wiki for a summary of how 11p is different from 11a, or stackoverflow for an answer with a summary of needed driver changes. The GeoNetworking protocol provides single-hop and multi-hop communication in vehicular ad hoc networks based on IEEE 802.11p/ITS-G5. It has been standardized by the ETSI Technical Committee ITS as part of its Release 1 set of specifications and is expected to be deployed in the next years.

This novel protocol reconfigures the network structure in accordance with the GPS positions of the network nodes. A position-based routing vehicular ad hoc network (PBR-VANET) is a specific type of mobile ad hoc network where the vehicles are the nodes and the routing is determined on the basis of node positioning. However, PBR-VANET routing protocols suffer from mass packet loss due to frequent changes in topology.

In Europe, 802.11p is used as a basis for the ITS-G5 standard, supporting the GeoNetworking protocol for vehicle to vehicle and vehicle to infrastructure communication. ITS G5 and GeoNetworking is being standardised by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute group for Intelligent Transport Systems. 4 Oct 2013 The GeoNetworking protocol is a network layer protocol that provides packet routing in an ad hoc network.
